Hawzah News Agency - Question: I am a student who is about to join the university. I am confused as to what I should specialize in. As you are more aware of the needs of society than I am, please guide me to the right vocation and I will be grateful.
Answer:
There is no doubt that when a person spreads his energy across many goals and directions, his focus weakens. As a result, he fails to achieve excellence in any one of them. The best results come when all one’s efforts are concentrated on a single goal, pursued within a clear and defined path.
I firmly believe in specialization. My advice to you is to make a clear decision and choose the field that best matches your interests and abilities and that also serves the real needs of your society. Then devote all your energy to achieving the highest level of excellence in that field. Do not forget to rely on Allah and seek His help through prayer, for true success lies in His hands alone.
Since you have asked for guidance regarding the most important fields of specialization, I consider the humanities—especially psychology and sociology—to be of great importance, particularly when they are supported by careful study of Islamic sources on these subjects. Specialization in commerce and economics is also highly valuable. Likewise, pursuing studies in the Hawza after completing a university education is even more significant.
Reflect deeply on your true inclinations, then choose your path accordingly. Place your trust in Allah, and dedicate your life, studies, and future to Him. In this way, whether you die at the beginning of the journey, in the middle, or at the end, you will have earned His Paradise. And is there any profit greater than that?
